The time has come to say goodbye to my old friends. They've been with me since 1994, were there to accompany me on all those walks after my hysterectomy, took me through many hours of standing in line at NSYNC concerts with my daughter Emily, walked the halls of the State Capitol as a Legislative Liaison for Kansas Commission on Disability Concerns when no other shoes fit my feet, then as they began to wear out and got replaced by newer models, they kept my feet comfy as I painted many rooms in our home. Now that the special cork glue can no longer hold the cork together and the soles are almost completely flat, it's time to send them on to a place where someone else can get some enjoyment, perhaps for a costume party next year. They've been lovingly placed in the bin that is going to Goodwill. It's tough parting with something that has been with me for so long, causing me to grieve a bit as I remember all the good times we've had together, but now there's Crocs, New Balance and an assortment of other Birkenstocks to take their place.... no to take over where they left off... because NOTHING will EVER truly take THEIR place!
